Listening to the Music–Connecting the Dots with Gluten Sensitivities

February 23, 2015 By Cathy Silver

music_note5 (2)The highly tuned ear of the musician can tell instantly when his note is off key or his instrument is not finely tuned; even slightly off makes him/her unhappy–and even temperamental at times. Wouldn’t it be nice if our innate could tell our cellular structure the same–or has it? Is beginning to happen? It’s time to connected the dots.

Some months ago, standing in my kitchen, I begin wondering about all of the gluten sensitivity; my own included. Suddenly, without warning, the thought occurred with lightening-bolt speed as if circumventing my neural network: could all of the food sensitivities be our “smart body” detecting toxins which are foreign to us and our “smart body” innately knows? Growing up I never knew anyone with celiac disease or the tsunami of food allergies that we experience today. What’s really going on?

Today, quite frankly I just feel better when I stay away or refrain from processed wheat and flour products. Why is that? Whole wheat was the only kind of bread my Mother purchased at the insistence of my father and I never suffered by it’s consumption. Yet in the last 10+ years the bloating and discomfort seem to come on like a flashing-yellow caution light blinking incessantly and warning me when I do not give way. My head and joints seem to join the chorus singing: better not, better not, better not eat that hamburger bun, pasta or bread or you will pay the price hours after the fact. Although unpleasant, it would be much better if I threw up quickly afterward–the culprits caught red handed and identified. But 10, 12, or 24 hours later, it is sometimes difficult remembering what the hell I ate! And, unlike the instrument which is out of tune, or the broken string on the bow, we cannot “hear” or see which note is off key and unlike the musician, we continue to play unaware the food ingested has made us out of tune–out of balance, the sour notes within and silently reeking havoc with our cells.

Could we pose that many of the more recent changes to our food sources have reacted with our innate smart body–and perhaps this is the signal from us to us? The alert and warning because the pesticides and toxins and manipulations have been mixed with the good, wholesome and hardy to to look like food of yesteryear? And although science, the FDA or other governing bodies such as the USDA have pronounced these levels acceptable–our smart body does not! Screaming louder and louder, our cells are clearly saying NO even when our brain does not yet connect these dots. Isn’t time to wake up?

There are beneficial systems that work by the same principle. One, such system we call homeopathy. This form of medicine is used for healing. Unlike allopathic medicine, the idea is a tiny tincture sends a signal so small that our body responds in a very powerful way. This signal to the body works in conjunction with the body’s own self-healing nature. Now, let’s look at the concept of “reverse engineering” the homeopathic principle. This time, the small toxic tincture is sending a message—only misinterpreted by us. This time the information we receive is from our innate smart body. This time, the message is: invader–poison–danger! Do not ingest this tainted food or your allergies, sensitivities and diseases will appear. Like the musician whose ear detects a off note or broken string and stops to make the adjustment, so can we. It may not be an audible signal but nevertheless we must listen to the subtle, the quiet, and the physical–our innate body is talking to us, but do we listen?

This is our signal to chose other foods that do not negativity affect us. But we must pay attention–it is up to us. Why wait 20 years to hear some declaration in the obscure back page of a newspaper or a final thought on the nightly news that finally says, we are mistaken. In the larger picture we as consumers, must clearly send this signal. Only then will the big corporate giants take time to “re-tune” their product and their ways. What is old and ancient will be new (knew) again. And, our cells, rest assured will play softly in peace working in harmony with our innate. Our smart body pleased we’ve listen to the music–harmony and balance with this piece, of the health picture restored! Without the toxic extras and “new-fangled” changes we will once again enjoy our breads, pastas and hard baked rolls just as our ancestors once did.

What is your body telling you? Journal about how you feel after eating certain foods. Notice how feel. Make changes for you!

Urban Horse

February 5, 2015 By Cathy Silver

Bike 2

The friendship began unexpectedly, but the magic was there all the time. Some where along that ride I realized the familiar relationship had grown. With the wind blowing against me and the sun on my face I peddled hard, breathing in the salty sea air and listening to the strong waves breaking along the beach—the sand barely visible from my vantage point as I peddled A1A. I had the option of the usual: my dependable car, or my bike. This morning I chose my bicycle; dodging orange and white road construction barriers and traffic, I held to the white markings which designated my lane.

There was a certain freedom I felt when I climbed aboard my silver steed. Uniquely the comradely had been building over the past four months and lately brought back memories of shared adventures aboard my very real horse; that strong heartfelt companionship of my chestnut mare so many years ago.

Instead of the clip-clop of hooves as we walked placidly together along the asphalt, it was the soft winding sound which emanated from the black steel gear-wheel and linked chain’s forward motion as it  circled around the circumference completing its rotation propelled by my determined quadriceps and hamstrings.

These days, I was the one exerting the physical effort not her, as the breeze forced me to peddle harder slowing my speed considerably in spite of working harder. My leg muscles called out.  My mind wandered.

Without the customary rack, I was forced to chain my bike to different Palm  trees in the hot sun.  Was this the birth of our relationship I wondered? Years ago, I securely looped the leather reins around the metal railing which served as sort of a modern hitching post running into a near-by Kmart for something to eat. Today, however, it was quite the opposite as I used a living tree for my technically inanimate object; worried when I walked away, would my silver steed be alright?

It’s funny how we attach, personify and build relationships with and to certain things. Surprisingly, my bike is my companion when I choose errands, meet friends for lunch or a quick trip to Whole Foods or local farmers market. I enjoy combining the exercise with being outdoors, and there is something satisfying about not always having to depend on my car. I have my bike routes and my car routes. Each offers its own advantage. Often hurried in my car, I select a different mind set when I swing my leg over the seat of my two wheel silver urban horse. There is a different pace and freedom that somehow brings solitude and peace when I peddle along in my own world and orchestrated break from the usual craziness of today’s hurried rat race. On my bike freedom really is a state of mind.

Happy Thanksgiving: Celebrating the Seasons of Life!

November 27, 2014 By Cathy Silver

Cool, Clear Thanksgiving Morning

The Sun Coming Up – Thanksgiving Morning 2014

The sun came up over my white weather-worn backyard fence welcoming the day.  A cool 55 and breezy for those of us living in the Broward-Dade locale. Today is Thanksgiving. Traditionally a holiday of family, food and lol–football. For others, a tradition that includes Macy’s parade. Some viewing it from the living room television screen, thousands will be huddled on the street watching large balloon characters & turkeys tethered by ropes, colorful marching bands in their best regalia, high kicking Rockettes and ornate elaborate extravagant floats. These and more, all symbols of things we have grown up with and love. Tradition. It is all around us. We love it. We live by it, and we look forward to ‘our tradition’ each year. Right? But what happens when we don’t fit in to the likeness of mainstream memes or the painted image imprinted in our minds-eye?

If change is the “new normal” and it’s affecting all parts of our lives, then I guess we should expect our holidays to take on a new look and feel. However most of us have strong resistance to change. The memorable Norman Rockwell painting has all but vanished in most nuclear families. We live and work in all parts of the globe; not everyone can always “get home.” Family dynamics change through divorce, death, marriages or downsizing. Sometimes the next in-line no longer desires to carry on the family tradition, refusing to pick up where Mom left off. What then?

Cheers, Friends, Seinfeld, Mash  sitcoms or the Star Trek series Next Generation helped visibility demonstrate family doesn’t necessarily stay confined to those in our biological circles.  As dysfunctional as the characters were at times in these half-hour episodes, they cared about each other in times of need and in their own way; mimicking life? Far truer and closer to our reality than we probably realize.  If, TV parrots life: Modern Family represents a new example, would you not agree? Or what about Mike and Molly?   Holidays, like life, evolve the way our life does. It may begin the years we’re in the dorm at school, in a particular neighborhood,  or within a close circle of friends.  Life just happens. The evolution is simply where we are in the moment writing our script in own personal movie–or sitcom. My own life and family looked very different 15 years–or even 30 years ago than today, and completely different than growing up.  I would say in a much better, and healthier view of the world; much more Zen. (the simplicity of their lives, the concentration and mindfulness of every activity, the calm and peace they find in their days.)

I am meeting friends at one of my favorite restaurants, in walking distance from my home, near the ocean. I will talk to my boys–now 27 and almost 31 on the phone who live thousands of miles from each other, and from Florida. I will make a call to Seattle and talk to my parents, divorced, but still living and touch bases with my siblings. I will send and receive Thanksgiving texts and talk other friends on the phone, and visit nearby friends, but mostly I will enjoy the day. I refuse to dwell in ‘what could or should have been’. I will simply enjoy the moment and company of others–laughing, sharing stories and having gratitude for today.  Creating new traditions again. It is a no-muss, no-fuss kind of year for me. What is important is embracing our life NOW and enjoying what is.

We are always at choice point. I encourage you to create something new and different.Reach out to someone less fortunate. Play golf, do something that you enjoy. Perhaps, take in a movie. Each Holiday has looked very different in the last 10 years and I am okay with that–in fact embracing what comes in an adventurous–let it unfold kind of way; expectations gone.  Be mindful, our holidays and our tradition can always look a number of ways. Be happy where you are right now, evolve the way your life evolves. Next year will be different.  When the artist begins with the blank canvas he or she is in the process of creation. Be the artist.   Choose the colors you love.  Paint your portrait with any color(S); joy is all that is required.  Use pastels, watercolors or oil. Use your fingers, sponges or a brush. Metaphors for the seasons of our life. Create something beautiful with what you have today.  I plan to and so can you!  Happy Thanksgiving to all!
